A word about level playing field

Wednesday 19 December 2018

Imagine you’re an artist, a performer, a star even, working in a show. Your work takes you all over the world. You’re often away from home and family, sometimes for long periods. It’s not ideal, but it’s your living, you have no choice. Now imagine you fall ill or are injured while you’re away. How does the country you’re in, charge for medical services?

In the medical profession there’s no such thing as a level playing field. Different countries have different, often radically different, ways of charging for medical services.

That’s why many artists insure with AssurEvents, to make sure they’re covered wherever they are. We follow our clients across the world. Many shows in Asia chose AssurEvents to protect their employees. Thanks to our experience and our international expertise, we can provide medical fees insurance and personal accident cover 24/7, worldwide. AssurEvents insurance cover is a great leveller.

There's no business like show business

Wednesday 19 December 2018

That’s as true now as when Irving Berlin wrote that famous song for Annie Get Your Gun in 1946. The entertainment world never ceases to amaze. Staging a show can be a massive operation. It recently took 50 trucks to move a Madonna show! Staging installation grows ever more complex, with more and more equipment involved. The machines, the equipment, the vehicles, all represent a potential risk. They must be insured against causing damage to people or materials. That’s why AssurEvents now offer an extension of the Civil Liability contract. This insures organiser’s vehicles when immobilized at a fix point, and then used as tools.

The high street fights back

Wednesday 19 December 2018

All over the world retail shopping areas are under threat. Online shopping is ripping the heart out of cities, towns and villages. We’re all guilty. We buy online and watch our local stores shut up shop. But the fight back has begun. Leading the way is LaBel Valette, the Street Culture Festival which ran on 7, 8 & 9 September 2018. The concept was unique. Bring together, from all over the world, artists, painters, designers, sculptors, graffiti artists, dancers, musicians, and all manner of entertainers to bring to life and inject vitality into a deprived urban area of Paris. The aim was to arouse interest in a whole region. The ‘show’ was massive, covering 40 hectares. You can imagine the work, the planning, the time involved, the organising nightmare, the perseverance, the sheer financial investment to put the event together and to make sure everything was, as they say, ‘all right on the night’.

What could possibly go wrong? Well, just in case, the organisers put their faith in AssurEvents to cover against loss of materials and potential cancellation of the event. As it happened the ‘show’ was a great success. To gain maximum impact, it remained open to the public for a month following the event. An added bonus is there is every chance the ‘show’ will become an annual event.

We can't all be Usain Bolt, but...

Wednesday 19 December 2018

Sports Day! is a welcome initiative introduced for the first time by the Minister for Sport. The event was a gathering of sports men and women, together with volunteers, who promote sport on a daily basis. The plan was to encourage 3500 active participants to reach out with the aim of ‘enrolling’ 3 million additional sports ‘ambassadors’. You can’t say the Minister doesn’t think big! The theme was simple: ‘Sport for All’. The

organizers recruited in various clubs and sports centres throughout Paris. Rowing clubs, judo clubs, cycle tracks, taekwondo, weightlifting, you name it, Sports Day! was there. Sport, of course, like any other activity, has its risks. One recent client asked AssurEvents for a personal accident warranty specifically to avoid the risks and injuries which could happen. Sports Day! was the first edition of this initiative. Let’s hope there’ll be many more. Who knows, this could be the start of something big.

Dolores O'Riordan, Rest In Peace

Wednesday 19 December 2018

The lovely Irish singer, Dolores O’Riordan, frontwoman of The Cranberries rock group, died in January 2018, in London, England. A mother of three, she was 46 years old. She was in London to record a new version of her famous song Zombies.

Hypnotism A Gift? An Art? A Science?

Wednesday 19 December 2018

Describe it how you like, it’s unquestionably fascinating. Hypnosis is a state of human consciousness involving focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness and an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestion. And, Messmer, the world-famous hypnotist, is a past-master of the craft. For decades he has been entertaining audiences all over the world using energy transfer, hypnosis, magnetism and other magical techniques. He has awesome power and astonishing ability. Millions have seen him on TV and stage. He has hypnotized over 100,000 people during his shows. Master though he is, he can still be caught out by the weather. His recent winter tour fell victim to exceptionally large snow falls. Even the heavy goods vehicles carrying the show’s equipment couldn’t get through. Messmer may not be able to forecast the weather, but his team are far-sighted. They contracted AssurEvents to insure the tour and this one financed a local supplier to maintain the show in Metz. Describe hypnotism how you will, but AssurEvents’ insurance is a cast iron fact.

Oh my! What logn eyelashes you have!

Wednesday 19 December 2018

And those drooping lips, that so perfectly cover your teeth. And the handsome way your ears stand back. As for the shape of your hump, well, what can we say? Only this: we’re talking thoroughbreds here, purebred camels as seen in Saudi Arabia’s annual ‘Miss Camel’ pageant.

The festival began in 1999 when a group of local Bedouins decided to stage a contest to promote the camel, the animal that’s so important in the daily life of the country’s people. Today the festival is unmissable. In 2017 more than 50,000 camels were entered for the month-long event held in Rimah, in Riyadh province. Spectators and entrants came from all over the world - 10,000 visas were issued for visitors. The event is like a monster Crufts Dogs Show for camels. Make no mistake, the camels, which include breeds such as the al-Wadah white, the al-Majahateer dark, and the al-Homor reddish brown, are truly beautiful.

They are judged and evaluated in a similar way to horses: that is bone structure, musculature, body proportions, just like equine conformation. Only purebred camels are allowed to compete. And though owners outside Saudi Arabia can enter, the camels must be kept in Saudi Arabia. There are camel auctions and much trading, and a mix of traditional festivities, poetry readings, song contests, competitions and various heritage activities. The festival’s slogan is, ‘Camels are Civilization’, reflecting the uniting role camels have played throughout the history of Saudi Arabia.

And here’s the clincher: the prize money in 2017 was worth almost €30 million - big money even in an oil rich world. The next annual show is scheduled for around February 2018 and AssurEvents is proud to have been chosen to insure the event. We will cover all the usual risks against cancellation - terrorist attacks, weather problems, sandstorms, fire, floods - you can’t be too careful - as well as many other things only AssurEvents would think of. Rest assured, it wasn’t just our long eyelashes that won the business.

Welcome in 2018!

Wednesday 19 December 2018

All the team wishes you a very happy new year!

Charles Aznavour new tour dates

Wednesday 19 December 2018

New tour dates ! Charles Aznavour? The Charles Aznavour? The living legend? Yes, you read that right. The legendary singer, composer, songwriter, musician, stage and screen actor, the one and only, the Voice himself, is about to embark, in 2018, on a seven-city concert tour taking in Paris, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Nantes. And, yes, you can be forgiven if you haven’t heard about him in a while. He hasn’t given any concerts for the past seven years. But now he has the bit between his teeth again and soon he’ll be ‘hitting the road, Jacques’ once more.

Will a new generation remember him? You betcha! Already over 40,000 people are online checking for news about the release of tickets. Don’t forget, this is the man the late Johnny Halliday saw as his ‘spiritual father’. This is the man who, to honour his status as an icon of French popular culture, was recently awarded a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s, Walk of Fame.

This is the man who has sold more than 180 million discs, who has written more than 1300 songs in various languages, who has been compared to Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra - some people even speak of Sinatra as the American Aznavour. Arguably, although he has always been intensely proud of his Armenian heritage, he is the most celebrated French vocalist and best-known French music hall entertainer ever.

Come the new year, the word on the street for months to come, is going to be ‘get me those tickets’. Speaking of the upcoming tour, Charles Aznavour said recently: ‘It’s not a question of whether I’m tired or not. The audiences certainly aren’t. I’m ready to sing on till I’m 100.’ Oh, by the way, did we mention he is 93 years old?

Lest we forget, Paris 13 november 2015

Wednesday 19 December 2018

Appalling though this story is, let’s spell it out for ourselves once again, just to make sure we remember things exactly. Two years ago, to this day, four-hundred-and-thirteen people were seriously injured, one-hundred of them critically, while a further one-hundred-and-thirty were left lifeless, slain, murdered deliberately in an act of cold-blooded, savage, butchery. They were among the audience at the Bataclan, where the rock group, Eagles of Death Metal, was playing.

The slaughter was the handiwork of three Islamic State jihadis - the word means struggle. And ever since, the world has struggled to make sense of the outrage. It was an attack on France, one of the biggest since WWII. It was the biggest attack on Europe since the deaths of 191 people in Madrid in 2004. The government declared a State of Emergency in French territories. The President met international executive officers to establish a coalition to fight IS.

As an insurer, AssurEvents can do nothing to prevent atrocities. But what we can most certainly do, is offer the most comprehensive cover against further barbarityFor the record, let’s spell this out as well, and in the necessary legalese.

To protect your events from loss through terrorism, AssurEvents indemnifies the Insured for their Ascertained Net Loss, as covered under the insurance, should any Insured Event(s) specified in the Schedule be necessarily Cancelled, Abandoned, Postponed, Interrupted or Relocated, in whole or in part, as a sole and direct result of any cause, occurring during the period of insurance, beyond the control of the Insured due to an Act of that occurs:

• At the Event location(s) or
• Within a radius of 50 km from the Event location(s) and within 15 days of the proposed start date of the Insured Event.

For the purpose of this endorsement an act of terrorism means an activity that:

• is committed for political, religious, ideological or similar purposes and involves a violent act or the unlawful use of force or an unlawful act dangerous to human life, or tangible property, and
• is by any person or group(s) of persons, whether acting alone or on behalf of or in connection with any organisation(s), but not including a sovereign government (de jure or de facto), and
• appears to be intended to:
• intimidate or coerce a civilian population, or
• disrupt any segment of the economy of a Government, State or Country, or
• overthrow, influence, or affect the conduct of any government de jure or de facto by intimidation or coercion, or
• affect the conduct of a Government by mass destruction, assassination, kidnapping or hostage taking.
There you have it, the full legals, bullet points and all. And never have bullet points been more appropriate. Finally, on this saddest of sad days, AssurEvents once again offers condolences to all affected by this unspeakable, heart-breaking tragedy.

Say a sceptical hello to autumn

Wednesday 19 December 2018

It’s November already. Time is doing what it does best, flying. As the song has it: ‘The falling leaves drift by the window, the autumn leaves of red and gold…’ The trees may turn to gold, but the weather can turn to cold. For event organisers, cold spells risk. For AssurEvents, autumn is our chance to remind you we offer guarantees for all sorts of cold-related risks. Cancellation due to rain, storm, winds, gales, fog, ice, snow. In fact, any sort of mad, bad weather that causes disruption or makes an event impossible to hold. We cover actors, participants, organizers, spectators, le tout ensemble. Bad weather cancellation cover means one thing - compensation if the worst comes to pass. Or, to put it another way, peace of mind. But bad weather is not always bad news. For example, AssurEvents had issued cover for a fashion show in New York. The organizers wanted lots of snow to show off their winter clothes collection. But not a snow-storm, not a wipe-out. We covered their needs exactly, down to the last flake. So, roll up, roll up, get your peace of mind here. Especially, ‘when autumn leaves start to fall’

‘Hello, Stageco and WiCreations? It's the Rolling Stones here…’

Wednesday 19 December 2018

When the Rolling Stones want to tour, the first people they call are Stageco and Wi Creations, the first, for the stage, (it helps!), the second for stage-set design. In the events business, Stageco and Wi Creations simply are the business. For the Rolling Stones recent ‘No Filter’ tour, which played 12 European countries finishing on 22nd October, they once again used these two suppliers. The results were amazing in all 12 venues with their associated systems creating spectacular stage architecture.

These included a giant cantilevered roofing system above the main performance area; devising a method for rigging and securing four 23 x 11 metre LED video screens in front of four vast steel towers, and building two mobile technical areas onstage.

We’re talking major construction work here. These guys’ wonderfully efficient workforce took care of everything, the technical design, fabrication, installation, the incredible lighting, the amazing sound, the fantastic atmosphere, the works. And everything to be packed and unpacked twelve times and work perfectly in twelve countries without a hitch. They even introduced, on the hoof as it were, new systems that were easily and quickly adaptable from concert to concert.

AssurEvents insured the stage throughout the tour.

Grand Opening of the La Perle Show

Wednesday 19 December 2018

You’ve certainly heard about the fabled Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, the driving force of Al Habtoor Group in the UAE and around the world. When he puts his name to something with the Al Habtoor Group, you know it will be spectacular. And it certainly was on 13th September 2017 when Al Habtoor City Theatre opened with ‘La Perle’ in Dubai. The theatre took five years to build and five minutes to be declared a resounding international success.

It’s unlike any other theatre in the world. In a way, it could hardly fail as it launched the fabulous new show from Franco Dragone. ‘La Perle’ is the UAE’s first ‘resident’ show, with a cast of 65 artists, each bringing their own skills, from acting, acrobatics, aquatics to gravity-defying aerobatics. ‘La Perle’ transports audiences - who come from all over the world - with out-of-this-world performances. A world of sand becomes a world of water as performers dive into the on-stage pool or fly through the air, creating a visually captivating experience above and below stage level, a truly immersive experience.

AssurEvents provides a wide range of insurance for the show from its conception on a piece of paper to now as a successful show with two performances per night. AssurEvents provided tailor-made cover for the works, respecting special delivery dates and commercial goals. We not only look after the show insurances but also designed the employee benefits package as we have for all 16 shows by Franco Dragone productions taking into consideration the unique risks taken by artists working on the most spectacular shows in the world.

Mama, the Music Festival of all Music Festivals

Wednesday 19 December 2018

Three days, 140 concerts, thousands upon thousands of visitors, this was the 2017 Mama Festival. From 18th-20th October, for the seventh time, the festival was held across Paris. The Mama Festival attracts a fabulous variety of French and international artists, working in different music genres, performing in more than 12 venues. They came from all over the world. Mama showcases emerging talents as well as famous established stars. Besides the concerts, the festival also hosted its renowned Music Convention. This is a magnet, not only for music fans but for thousands of senior music and festival industry professionals. Including, of course, the headline act in the event insurance business, AssurEvents. We were there on all three days to explain to producers, organisers and performers, everything they need to know about events insurance, this ever more vital aspect of show business. The festival was such a huge success - with attendance estimated at 4713 - there’s already talk of a repeat performance next year. It’s pencilled in our diary, just in case.

Quai 54 It's back and better than ever

Wednesday 19 December 2018

After a one-year break due to the state of emergency, the unmissable Quai 54 tournament returned on 8th- 9th July 2017. The Quai 54 tournament is one of the most respected international street basketball tournaments in the world. It took place in Paris on the famous Reuilly lawn. Sponsored by Industreet, the Nigerian TV drama and entertainment series, the event drew in superstar names Andrew Albicy, Evan Fournier, Johan Passave Ducteil and many others.

Quai 54 is all about atmosphere. The international captain of the Yard Team, Andrew Albicy, said; ‘We’re here to have fun and enjoy ourselves’. It’s not just basketball players who love it. Footballers, boxers, swimmers, athletes, sports men and women, amateur and pro, and the public are all fans. Between games, singers and musicians such as rappers MHD and Ninho entertained the crowds.

The 2016 event was cancelled because of the terrorist attack in Nice. To counter the terror threat AssurEvents set up an insurance contract for 2017 with guarantees in case of cancellation, postponement, or total abandonment. We also covered the usual risks of bad weather and access difficulties because of public transport problems. Thankfully, everything went well. Quai 54 is a great two-day gathering for people of all ages. It’s also a marketing dream. How could it not be, with more than 20 professional players, 350 amateurs, and 15,000 visitors all having a slam-dunk of a time!

The battle for the Benelux Event Awards 2016

Wednesday 19 December 2018

And what a battle it was. For the first time in the history of the Benelux Event Awards, the 12 finalists were judged on criteria defined by Assurevents. The criteria are those considered essential to the smooth running of a given event. The winners of the Insurance & Safety Award were VO Communication in partnership with Verhulst Events & Partners. They won the prize for their organization of, Waterloo 1815, a celebration of the bicentenary of the battle of Waterloo. The awards ceremony was planned for 24th March 2016 but was postponed to 12th April following the Brussels attacks on 22nd March. During the ceremony the Assurevents team were on stage to explain in detail the criteria used to select the winners. VO Communication put in place a complete and all-embracing security plan covering the management of risks. This included cover for the venue itself; cover for visitors - there were 130,000 over two days; cover for 5,300 ‘re-enactors’ and 360 horses; fire risk, of course - there were four tons of gunpowder onsite for the canon; and many, many other elements. The comprehensiveness and complexity of the plan is what singled out VO Communication as winners. They thoroughly deserved their prize, so much so we gave them another as a bonus. On top of the Insurance & Safety Award, Assurevents gave the winners a trip to London, staying at a prestigious 4-star hotel, with a sightseeing helicopter flight over the city thrown in for good measure. It’ll be their chance to look down on Hyde Park Corner at the statue of the winner of the famous battle, the Duke of Wellington.

Summer may be over, hey, it's not all bad news

Wednesday 19 December 2018

Assurevents is back, back in the limelight, but behind the scenes. To bring the curtain down on summer, We Are The Oracle - WATO - took over the Espace Pailleron in Paris for the third year in a row. They turned the giant swimming pool into a huge, dance floor for Underwater 3 - The Light Bath event. The event sold out days before it opened. WATO - the clandestine Paris party planners - as usual made an amazing, crazy night for their guests. National press supported the event, national TV loved it, and Assurevents loved being there, discretely out of sight to make sure everything went without a hitch.

Relive the D Day 2014

Wednesday 19 December 2018

The commemoration, at Ouistreham, of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings was one of the major events of early 2014. Brice Mourer, associate director of Magic Garden, chose AssurEvents to insure the ‘backstage’ elements.

The overall concept, the ‘set’ designs, the quality of the teams involved, were all part of Magic Garden’s pitch. Using archive footage as a basis, the whole story, the vast chronicle of the war had to be told. Magic Garden planned to involve more than 500 local volunteers. It was also vital to pay homage to the veterans. It is, after all, their story.

Many world leaders, including François Hollande, Barack Obama, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 and Angela Merkel, attended the event, which was relayed around the world.

WHAT’S THE PURPOSE OF THE INSURANCE?

Outdoors and can’t be cancelled! Insurance is a way of reassuring a client that everything has been considered. It’s a way to protect the business in hand and demonstrably take responsibility.

AssurEvents provides a perfect understanding of Magic Garden's needs, a pragmatic analysis to find the right solution while minimizing costs by, for example, finding partners abroad who could handle this type of risk. AssurEvents has the expertise to manage risks on major events.

We’re pleased to say the result was, like the war itself, win-win.

"VTM be a part of it!"

Wednesday 19 December 2018

Tuesday 2nd September 2014 was a big day for TV channel VTM. It was the day they celebrated their 25th anniversary. To thank viewers for their loyalty VTM created a unique show: ‘Thank You For All The Magic.’ The Belgian seaside town of Nieuwpoort, with its beautiful natural setting, was chosen as the location. A huge sand-sculptured living room was created on the beach. Two five-meter illuminated puppets represented the spectators. A giant water ‘screen’ represented the television on which people could watch 25 years of VTM’s most memorable moments and get an advance preview of the magic to come in future. Over 20,000 people attended the show.

They were surrounded by all sorts of entertaining delights: 50 coloured dancing fountains, a 250m pier dressed with sparkling light effects, 1000 ‘light’ jars, 250 dancers with controlled light bracelets, a laser show, live performances from VTM’s stars, and on top of this, 2000 fire arrows! What could possibly go wrong? Just in case,VTM commissioned AssurEvents to cover the show. As the TV company’s strapline says: ‘VTM - be a part of it.’ And we most assuredly were.

D Day anniversary commemoration

Wednesday 19 December 2018

The landing on the Normandy beaches, on 6 June 1944, was the largest and most powerful sea, air and airborne invasion in history. This year, the 70th anniversary, is a special occasion to pay tribute to the sacrifice, bravery and dedication of all involved in freeing Europe from Nazi occupation. The landing was the start of the Allied victory in WWII.

The main ceremony will take place in Ouistreham, the small port that serves the city of Caen. In 1944 Ouistreham was, tragically, at the eye of the storm.

AssurEvents is proud to be involved as risk manager and insurance broker for the D-Day Memorial Commemoration. We have extensive know-how in managing the risks and developing insurance policies, including general liability and insurance costs, for this type of public event.

AssurEvents puts you first at the Olympic Games !

Wednesday 19 December 2018

Sochi is the first major sporting event of 2014. Snow sports, thrills and spills not to be missed.

The Opening Ceremony on the 7th February has set the tone, no false starts for the 22nd Winter Olympics. The public was enchanted by a grand historical fresco with a spectacular décor, a tribute to the Russian Ballets, athlete constellations and, of course, the remix of the Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” by the Russian Police Choir.

AssurEvents congratulates its customers who illuminated the whole opening and closing ceremonies, projecting images each more spectacular than the next. AssurEvents presents its infosession

Wednesday 19 December 2018

Monday 30th March 2015 was a big day for the events industry in Belgium. That’s when the annual Benelux Event Awards took place at the Kinepolis Antwerp.

Prior to the Grand Gala evening the organizers, BESA, have arranged an infosession presented by AssurEvents.

Nick Barnacott, CEO of AssurEvents, was the speaker. The Theme of this infosession was be: Prevent The Risks: How To Use Event Cancellation Insurance.

And if that doesn’t sound like a lot of laughs, it actually was really interesting. Nick did not only present, he took questions from the floor.
